Meadowland Medicine: Help Restore a Local Coastal Prairie

  • Kanoff Meadow 280 Kanoff St Montara, CA, 94037 United States (map)

Join the Watershed Stewards Program and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to restore the native habitat at Kanoff Wet Meadow! These 4-hour workdays will focus on weeding purple velvet grass (and potentially other introduced species) to increase habitat for native plants and promote local biodiversity. Sign up for one or both days!

Volunteers should expect to:

  • Learn about ecological restoration techniques and riparian ecology

  • Work outside in variable weather (hot, cool, sun, rain, etc.)

  • Walk on uneven terrain in potentially muddy soil or wet grass

  • Spend time kneeling and bending

  • Use hand tools to remove introduced species

Prepare for working outdoors by bringing:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)

  • Long pants, long sleeves, long socks recommended

  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty

  • Hat/sunscreen and rain gear/boots

  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable

  • Personal snacks, if desired

  • Plan for potential exposure to rain, mud, poison oak, ticks, prickly plants

  • Prepare for limited to no cell reception, 10+ minute walk to bathroom, and limited access to drinking water.

  • We will provide gloves and tools. We bring light snacks and a water jug for volunteers to refill their water bottle if needed.

About the site: Rancho Corral de Tierra’s meadows, scrub, and chaparral habitats are home to an abundance of plants and wildlife, including rare species such as peregrine falcons, Choris’s popcorn flower, and harlequin lotus. Additionally, several creeks running through the park have historically hosted populations of steelhead trout, an important Salmonid species to the region. The work you do will support the health of the preserve's ecosystems!

Visit the National Park Service’s Rancho Corral de Tierra page to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All participants must be registered through this Eventbrite page. Participants will be required to sign waivers at the sign-in booth; event staff will be present to assist as necessary. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Volunteers age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.
