SHORELINE AT MOUNTAIN VIEW

Shoreline at Mountain View is a sprawling 750-acre park featuring a diverse range of attractions. These include an amphitheater, a golf course, a designated area for kite flying, a walking trail, the historic Victorian Rengstorff House, and a wildlife refuge. Shoreline is built on top of a capped landfill that is no longer in use. Grassroots Ecology conducted restoration work from 2016 to 2019 at Permanente Creek by reintroducing a dense mosaic of California native plants—large patches of coyote brush, California rose, and marsh baccharis—to attract pollinators and home wildlife. Presently, we are working to restore the marsh-upland transition zone along the Bay Trail and Permanente Creek.

OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS AT SHORELINE

Community volunteer days take place alongside the Shoreline Park Trail. Volunteer days are focused on restoring the upland transition zone in the marsh habitat with the goal of extending and enhancing the marsh habitat for the several wildlife species that make it their home. Volunteers aid in sheet mulching to prepare for planting, invasive species removal, and native plant installation.

PAST RESTORATION WORK AT SHORELINE

The City of Mountain View, Grassroots Ecology, and the Santa Clara Audubon Society worked together to restore a section of Permanente Creek in 2016. The goal was to enhance the habitat for burrowing owls and the common yellowthroat. From 2016 to 2019, large swaths of invasive plant species were removed and 1,079 native plant species were planted. As a result, burrowing owls and common yellowthroats have been seen foraging in the area as well as numerous other bird species, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, and mammals.
