Naturalist Walk: Night Hike at Arastradero Preserve

Looking for a spooky start to your Halloween weekend? Check out this unique opportunity to discover what comes alive in our open spaces after-hours.

As night falls, Grassroots Ecology staff and naturalist friends will guide you around Arastradero Preserve's grassy hills and oak woodlands. We'll keep an eye out for critters such as bats, owls, spiders, glow-in-the dark scorpions and millipedes, and more!

Attendees should expect to walk at least 2 miles on dirt and gravel trails with limited visibility. Don’t forget your flashlight or headlamp (red/UV light recommended)! There will be UV flashlights to borrow if needed.

Waivers/Registration:
All attendees must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Volunteers age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.

Parking:
1530 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto. Attendees may park in the main lot. There is no parking available along Arastradero Road or Page Mill Road. Please note: The park will officially close to the public at 7pm, and cars will not be able to exit the lot until the end of the event at 8:30pm.

Alternate Transportation:
There are two bike racks near the parking lot.

Meeting Space:
Past the information kiosk in the parking lot, down the concrete path to the buildings and garden. Water and restrooms will be accessible at the beginning and at the end of the hike.

Prepare for Outdoor Activities:
A flashlight or headlamp (red/UV light recommended)
Face mask for COVID-19 safety
Reusable water bottle
Snacks, if desired
Long pants, long sleeves, and layers recommended - it will get chilly!
Comfortable, sturdy, closed-toed shoes
Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
Plan for potential exposure to poison oak, ticks

Event Cancellations:
We are committed to the safety of our staff and community. In the event that we must cancel a workday due to extreme weather conditions or poor air quality, a Grassroots Ecology staff person will reach out via email no later than 5:00 PM the day prior to this event.

Grassroots Ecology encourages people from all identities and backgrounds to participate in our programs. Many of our programs are outdoors and involve moving and working in a variety of landscapes. If you have accessibility concerns (e.g. allergies, limited mobility, learning differences), our programs are flexible and we are happy to work with you.
