Together we will be working to improve habitat for the resident burrowing owl population by watering the California native plants we planted this winter. California native plants will attract this endangered species' prey base (rodents and insects).
Activities involve digging with hand tools, bending, kneeling, carrying buckets of water and/or mulch, as well as walking on uneven terrain.
Alviso residents will receive a stipend for their participation.
Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Alviso Bufferlands webpage to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.
Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. There will be a second waiver for the City of San Jose that all volunteers sign once on site.
Parking information: 150 Nortech Pkwy, San Jose, CA 95134 is the closest address to the project site. The site is not open to the public because it is sensitive habitat for burrowing owls. Access will be provided through the large metal gates at the end of the road - there will be a sign for the event. Park inside the gates of the project site along the unpaved road. View the parking map posted below.
Please arrive between 9 and 9:30 - there will be coffee and snacks available as volunteers arrive. The gates will be closed at 9:30 when the event begins.
Meeting Space: We will meet inside the gate at the main project site, down the unpaved road. Grassroots Ecology and Alviso in Action staff will be present to welcome you.
Facilities: No bathrooms or running water are available at the project site.
